Why Marriage?
Why is marriage important? Why is it talked about so often? Why should I ever get married? These questions are so very common to so many and are questions that should be asked by everyone. These important questions when asked in the context of eternal truth and the Gospel of Jesus Christ can become some of the most powerful truths of life. They are so powerful because eternal marriage and family are the very pillars of our Heavenly Fathers plan for his children. You will need to discover and gain a witness of these truth's for yourself, but today I want to share some of what I have discovered and gained witness of based on these questions.
When, where and who you get married to is one of the single most important decisions you'll ever make. It can also be one of the most amazing and beautiful choices you make. Marriage is ordained of God, supported by God and created by God, and it can be where some of the most joy and happiness are found in mortality, and to say nothing of the eternal joy it can grant us in the life hereafter. Marriage is important because a man or woman cannot obtain perfection and cannot receive a fullness of joy without one another.
We are here on earth to obtain a physical body, to choose whether we will follow Christ and to create eternal families. Without the family the whole Plan of happiness is ruined, without marriage it is ruined. We talk so often about this subject because it is so important, because it literally will impact the eternities. There are those who will not get married in this life and others whose family situations are less than ideal, but Christ lives and knows your pains and injustices and all that the Father has promised will be received in his time. Trust in the Lord and his promises and hold on to Christ. To many, hearing the topic of marriage and family can be painful, but it is needed and needs to be understood.
Why should you marry? This one I'm gonna keep to myself and let you find joy in the discovery of this question through the holy spirit of truth. Elder Richard G. Scott gave an amazing address in April of 2011 titled "The Eternal Blessings of Marriage" in which he provides some insight to this question and his own personal sacred experience with his Eternal companion.
I know that marriage is ordained of God and your Father in Heaven cares very deeply about your Eternal Family and Marriage. From my own experience I have felt the inexpressible joys of marriage and family and there is nothing that I desire and hope for more than my own Eternal Marriage and Family. I second President Nelson's words when he said in his Sunday evening address "If it were possible for me to speak one-on-one with every young adult, I would plead with you to seek a companion with whom you can be sealed in the temple. You may wonder what difference this will make in your life. I promise it will make all the difference! As you marry in the temple and return repeatedly, you will be strengthened and guided in your decisions." I know with all my heart that God loves each of us perfectly and desires for our joy and happiness and marriage. Pray to know if these things are true and to know if marriage is of God. As you do with a sincere heart and open mind I know the lord is just waiting to answer the very longings of your heart!
